24.06 US Open:

Tiger Woods på onsdag: "It's one of the best setups I've ever seen. It's fair, it's difficult. The winds are blowing this year, so it's going to be a great test. I'm sure it'll be one that all the players will certainly enjoy."

Tiger Woods på søndag: "I think they lost control of the golf course. It's terrible for our national championship."

Call it a sadistic bent, but as enjoyable as watching Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson duel throughout Sunday's final round at the U.S. Open was, equally as fun was listening to and reading the comments made by players afterward.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club went from being a darling of a setup early in the week to a devilish layout of trickery by week's end. In short, Shinnecock Hills superintendent Mark Michaud was elated to hear the players' perspective. It only meant he and his staff, along with the U.S. Golf Association had done their jobs.

Any time the razor-sharp edge of being difficult, yet fair is being navigated, not much will be needed to sway difficult to diabolical. In Southampton over the weekend, the winds picked up and the greens dried out.

Compliments turned to cursin'.

Tiger Woods on Wednesday: "It's one of the best setups I've ever seen. It's fair, it's difficult. The winds are blowing this year, so it's going to be a great test. I'm sure it'll be one that all the players will certainly enjoy."

Tiger Woods on Sunday: "I think they lost control of the golf course. It's terrible for our national championship."

A lot of went wrong stemmed around the par-3 seventh green where by Saturday even the best of shots were not holding the green. The scene was nearly reminiscent to the 18th hole in the final round of the 1998 U.S. Open at the Olympic Club.

And for all of the oh-my-gawds, on Sunday the seventh hole was only the fourth-toughest hole. The toughest honor went to the par-4 10th, which actually played like a par-5 and then some (a scoring average of 5.03).

The final-round scoring average was 78.7, nearly nine strokes over par, which further points out the brutality of Shinnecock on Sunday. The fact remains, though, that everyone was playing the same course. No one player held an advantage over another.

PGA Tour players whining about course conditions, no matter how difficult, does not resonate with the average Joe weekend player. Nearly every week on the PGA Tour is a birdie binge on meticulously manicured courses. Occasionally the rough is a little high, the greens a little bumpy, but most weeks there isn't a peep to be heard.

Of the first 23 PGA Tour stroke-play events of the 2004 season, only the Masters and U.S. Open were won with single digit under-par scores. The average winning under-par score on Tour this year is 15.13, or slightly less than 4-under par per round.

Interestingly, this year's U.S. Open winner displays a demeanor that is easier than South African peer Ernie Els. Goosen never winced nor wavered. He accepted Shinnecock's punishment and got in his jabs when he could. Goosen's 4-under winning score was the lowest of the three Opens held at Shinnecock.

The U.S. Open is considered a major for the very reason that it's decidedly different than every other week on the PGA Tour. Course setups are meant to be difficult and if they sometimes turn nasty, so be it.

In the end, someone will want to win more than they want to whine.
